Gidgee(acacia cambagei)
Generally small to medium-sized tree native to Australia, particularly found in arid and semi-arid regions of Queensland, the Northern Territory, and parts of New South Wales. It is known for its extremely dense and durable wood, often dark brown with rich hues and fine grain patterns. It is this pattern that has it described as Ringed Gidgee.
It’s timber is among the hardest and most dense of all Australian hardwoods. Its color ranges from dark brown to reddish-brown, with some pieces exhibiting darker streaks or figuring, making it a sought-after wood for decorative purposes. The wood is also highly resistant to termites and decay, contributing to its long-lasting qualities.
Gidgee trees are distributed across Australia’s inland regions, especially in Queensland, where they are often found in scrublands or on clay plains. They thrive in areas with low rainfall and are highly adaptable to dry, saline, and alkaline soils. Gidgee trees are slow-growing, and their dense wood reflects their arid environment, where growth conditions are harsh. Gidgee timber’s combination of durability, resistance, and beauty makes it an invaluable resource for both practical and decorative uses. Despite its slow growth, the wood is highly sought after for specialty applications where strength and appearance are essential. This piece will need to be acclimated in your workshop prior to use.
