A large tree that grows up to 70m tall and produces a pink to reddish brown heartwood and a pale coloured sapwood. This timber has a long history of use and is best known for Shou Sugi Ban where cladding boards are charred to make it more durable and waterproof. This technique has been used in many craft application and the easy workability make it a popular timber for turning and carving.
